Luxury Watches of the Rich & Famous: Who’s Wearing What?

Whether you’re an avid luxury watch collector or you’re just beginning your search for your first high-end timepiece, the world of celebrities can provide plenty of inspiration. Not only do celebrities tend to have the money to spend on luxury items like these, high-end watch brands may also offer them ambassadorship which comes with freebies or discounts, or lend them a particularly special watch to wear on the red carpet. Celebrities are, in a way, walking advertisements for high-end watch manufacturers, yet many of them have honed their own style over the years and have been seen with a number of different timepieces which are clearly part of a personal collection.

In this article, we’ll be looking at the interesting watch choices of five celebrities from the worlds of Hollywood, TV, music and sport. Who is most in tune with your style?

Serena Williams

Serena Williams is arguably one of the best tennis players of all time, having the all-time record of 13 Grand Slam singles titles to her name, as well as four Olympic gold medals. She’s celebrated the world over for her hard working attitude, incredible talent and charity work. It stands to reason that any luxury watch manufacturer would be very keen to have her as their ambassador, and Audemars Piguet is the lucky brand that has succeeded.

Audemars Piguet is a Swiss luxury watch manufacturer, founded in 1875. Their timepieces tend to be striking in look, with sharp lines and exposed mounting screws. On paper, their designs can sound like an acquired taste, and although this may be true for some, their signature look has earned cult success.  As an extremely high-end brand, Audemars Piguet watches retail at eye-watering prices, with some select models fetching hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone has been gracing our screens since the 1970’s and has appeared in hugely successful films such as Rocky, Rambo and The Expendables. A legendary action hero, Stallone can often be seen with an attractive Panerai watch on his wrist, both on and off screen. Legend has it that Sylvester Stallone walked into a Panerai shop in Florence, Italy, back in 1993 and fell in love with the brand.

The iconic Hollywood actor has been wearing Panerai watches ever since, and appears to have a large collection of designs. Panerai themselves have embraced his commitment to their brand, and released a collection dedicated to Stallone in 1995. Panerai tend to make their watches in more limited quantities than other manufacturers and their designs are often described as bold with a fierce personality.

Ellen Degeneres

Ellen Degeneres has wide-reaching celebrity credentials; she started out as a comedian and now hosts one of the biggest daytime talk shows in the US, as well as providing voice acting for films such as Finding Nemo and Finding Dory. Her philanthropism and charity work is impressive, and she is an outspoken advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. Degeneres is known to be an avid Rolex fan, and is said to have a collection of both vintage and modern designs by arguably the most well-known luxury watch manufacturer in the world.

Ellen has been spotted wearing a number of Rolex watches, including the Daytona, a Day-Date President, and Yacht-Master in rose gold.

Jay Z

Jay Z, or Shawn Carter as he is also known, is one of the most successful rap artists of all time and is famously married to fellow chart-topper, Beyonce. He has rapped in the past about Rolex and Audemars Piguet, and both Hublot and Audemars Piguet have made special edition watches in collaboration with Carter, in part due to his passion for fashionable wristwatches, and partly down to his superstar credentials.

In recent years, he’s mostly been seen out and about wearing Hublot timepieces. It is said that his watch collection is substantial, and with a net worth of $810million it’s easy to see how such a collection is possible - particularly when you consider some Hublot timepieces can retail for tens of thousands of dollars, if not more.

Get the look: Black and gold are two colours which feature heavily in Jay-Z’s watch collection, so this Hublot MDM is the perfect homage to his signature style. With a jet black dial and gold case, the smooth and decadent look of this timepiece would enhance any collection. WAS £3,495 – NOW £2,796.

Andy Murray

Sir Andy Murray is one of the UK’s best ever tennis stars, and has a number of international wins and Olympic medals under his belt. As the first British man to win more than one Wimbledon singles title since 1935, he’s certainly captured the hearts of the nation. His long ambassadorship with Rado watches has been lauded as a good luck charm, and fans have spotted him wearing a number of models from the manufacturer; such as the Rado D-star 200 and the Hypercrome self-winding chronograph.

Although Rado watches do not tend to be as well-known as some of the other luxury brands, they are eye-catching and certainly give off an air of luxury and innovation. Rado created the world’s first scratch-resistant watch, and their dedication to longevity and quality cannot help but show.

Get the look: This slick black Rado Diastar watch is extremely good-looking and has a hidden clear section on the back of the case so that you can see the intricate workings inside. The square-shaped dial seamlessly moulds into the bracelet, and the small diamonds used in place of numbers give this piece just the right amount of showiness. WAS £1,295 – NOW £1,036.
